Joule or Newton, That is the Question: The Benefits of Mechanical Control Elements in Automotive User Interfaces

Published by Manuel Kuehner on

This is a shortened version of a talk that I gave at the Smart Haptics conference in December of 2022 in Seattle. The talk focuses on the benefits of classical mechanical control elements when used as automotive user interfaces. The main focus is the robustness of different types of control elements against unintended triggering. I propose to use the “trigger work” (measured in joule) as a helpful metric for that purpose.
